FUSION OF EDUCATION DISTRICTS.
DISCLAIMER BY THE MINISTER.
[United Pkess Association.]
Christchurch, April 22. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, arrived from the North this morning, and left by the first express for Timaru . He will probably visit Waimate to-morrow, and go on to Dunedin on Saturday afternoon. On Tuesday next the Minister will open the new Training College for Teachers in Dunedin. He will return North on Wednesday, and leave for Wellington by that evening s steamer. In the course of a short interview, Mr Fowlds said that there was no truth in the statement that the Government intended to bring about a fusion of. the smaller education districts with the large ones. No definite decision as to what would bo done in the Education Department had. been arrived at yet. The largest amount of expenditure was vi connecvere fixed to statute, and had been were fixed by statute ,and had been raised only last year. There was^o intention whatever to touch them. Tho suggested fusion of education districts Kd never been discussed, and it did not strike him as being at all a practicable scheme.
