CORRESPONDENCE.

The Minister for Public Works forwarded .a 'reply received by him from the Minister for Railways in reference fo setting, back the fence at Wakefield in order to widen Whitby road. The Minister for Railways, pointed out that it was no part of the duties of the Railway Department to provide land for road, widening purposes, and the railway land at Wakefield was already insufficient to provide for future developments. As the private owners^ in the vicinity would be benefited by the widening of the lane, and probably the Waimea County Council also, he was prepared to alienate a strip 20 feet wide where requested provided the owners or the County Council would acquire and hand over to the Department certain other lands which could be utilised for providing additional accommodation at the railway station, It was resolved that the Chaiman, Cr Hoult and the Engineer interview residents in the locality in reference to the proposal and report to the Council at the next meeting.
