PERSONAL.
Mr John King, Inspector of the Audit Department, who has been retired, is well known in Nelson district, where he lias been stationed for many years. He has a record of tliirty-two years' service.
Mr Andrew Turnbull, S.M., who has been retired under the Civil Service Superannuation Act, was well"known in Nelson. He was appointed District Land Registrar in 1872, and was subsequently in the Lands Registry Office in Wellington. He was appointed Registrar of the Supremo Court at Nelson .in 1879. .. In 1891 he became Stipendiary Magistrate at Napier, being removed to Hawera in 1904. ■
Mr Henry Trent,. Commissioner of Crown Lands in Hawke's JBay, who is among the Civil ServantsNvho have been retired, comes from South Hackney, London, where he was born in 18-18. He received his education in England, and came to New Zealand in November, 1860. Three years later he was appointed a cadet in the Survey Department under the Provincial Government. In 1868 he was appointed"- draughtsman at Westport, then >the central office of Nelson South-west Goldfields District. At this! time the Bullor goldfields were attracting hundreds of miners, and the services of surveyors were in considerable demand. ■ He was "appointed assistant mining surveyor, which position he retained till . early in -1873, when he was promoted to be District Surveyor '" in charge of the Grey Valley district". Iln 1904, lie was protnoted Comtnissiotter of Crown Lands- and Chief Surveyor for Marlborough, and in 1906 he was appointed Commissioner for Hawkejs Bay.
