RECOGNITION OF HEROISM.
- The British Ambassador at Rome, Sir Reniiell Rodd, was received on a recent Sunday hy Queen Elena, to whom he remitted the insignia of the Order of the Royal Red Cross, conferred on her by King Edward as an expression of his admiration for the heroic work she accomplished in the assistance of , the victims of the earthquake. "'."'' ■ The Queen thanked, the Ambassador, most gratefully, saying that she considered jjhe distinction conferred upon- her as "a'-riew proof of the sympathy of Britain towards Italy. - The Queen of Italy accompanied the . King* to Messina, and for several days nursed"'- wounded women andj children in one 'of the' battleships. '. The destitute and naked condition of the rescued" people made so strong an appeal to the -nature, bf Queen 'Elena, that 'she divested herself "of her own clothing to supply, their urgent need, and was for some time herself stockingless and sparsely clad.
