AMUSEMENTS.

THE ROYAL WELSH MALE CHOIR TO-NIGHT. - This evening will witness at the Theatre Royal, ,Nelson, the eagerly anticipated appearance of the famous Welshmen under the direction of J. and N: Tait. In criticism of the opening concert the Melbourne "Herald" said : — The Royal Welsh Male Choir gave its first concert last night in the Melbourne Town Hall to a good audience. Twenty singers, the conductors Mi- W< Thomas, included, and an accompanist at the piano. Mr H. Hughes, constituted the choir. It may at once be stated that nothing more perfect in this particular, line could be heard than the performances of these singers". First" of all their voices are exceptionaly fine. As sonorous .basses as these Welshmen possess may be found among Australian choruses, but the quality of the tenors form a particular feature of his choir. The full and ringing tone they produce endows its performances with quite unusual splendor. Balance, intonation and shading were unimpeachable in last night's interpretation of a great variety of. songs. For delicacy of tone, production of phrasing the chorus Cwgs (this uncanny word represents a Welshman's notion of sleep) may be mentioned as an exquisite example of the choir's proficiency. "Abide with Me'^was another of. its subtle interpretations. Solos, quartettes and trios contributed by members equalled the performance of the choir in musical precision and finish. Both the conductor and the accompanist proved themselves able musicians, and to them, no doubt, the high standard of the performance must be mainly credited. Advantage should be taken of the' opportunity of gaining good seating by booking beforehand at Mr Jackson's. Day. sales to 3s division also available.'
