The Queen, through the "Daily Mail," heartily congratulated Lieutenant Shackleton upon his great achievement. Lieutenant Shaeklefcon's cablegram to the 'Daily Mail' states that Messrs Adams and Brocklehust, Professor David, and Messrs Mackay, Marshall and Marson, left Cape Royd on the sth March to ascend Mount Erebus. They climbed on the seventh, with a sleigh and carrying their equipment on their backs, to an altitude of 9500 feet, the thermometer being 50 degrees below freezing point. After a violent blizzard lasting 30 hours, they reached the old crater on the ninth, and found unique, fumaroles or smoke holes. The crater was filled with felspar, crystals, pumice and sulphur. The summit was reached on the tenth. The active crater was half a mile in diameter and 800 feet deep. Volumes of steam and sulphurous gas were rising 2000 feet. After making collections they glissaded down, and readied Cape Royd on the eleventh,. Meteorological observations were takl on until the end of the expedition.
