The . friends of Mr Percy Poole, son of Mr W. F. Poole, of Bridge street, will be pleased to learn that he has obtained his master mariner's certificate, ; The Hon. It. McKenzie returned to Auckland from his North of Auckland trip last evening. He will probably leave on Friday on a tour of inspection of the Thames goldfields, and the proposed route of the East Coast railway. The Hon G. Fowlds visited Taihape yesterday, an dopened the new Technical School last night. The Hon D. Buddo is visiting Napier ! He was welcomed at the Medical Association gathering. , Mr T- M. Wilford has been re-elect-ed chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board. ■ . Captain Edwin, who is among those about to be retired, has been for . 33 • years in the Government service. He 1 was born in Camden Town, London, , in 1839, and entered the British Navy as a cadet in 1853. He remained in s her Majesty's service for eighteen i years, during which time he rose successively to the ranks of lieutenant • and commander. He participated in active service during the military operations in the Black Sea at the time : of the invasion of Russia by the Brit- ■ ish French and Sardinian combined ) forces, and he was present at the bomi baidment of Odessa and Sebastopol. < At the time of the trouble with the • Maoris, ho was ou H.M.S. Elk, then ' on the Pacific station. He retired in I 1871, and a little later on he accepted ■ the Government. post of examiner of ■ shipmasters; and mates.
