About three hundred children and one hundred and fifty adults left by the ten a.m. train for Foxhill, Waiiti, and Belgrove, and a very pleasant day was - spent blackberrying, the large party returning by the evening train. To-morrow the Girls' Central school the Hampden streer; and Haven road schools will hold their annual picnic, and it is expected that six hundred children, with tHeir parents and- friends, will make the journey by rail into the country. .■ ' ■; .'; ; '■- ..'...'. . „,. •.. The Chief. Postmaster -informs us that the following local firms have had stamping machines;for the prepayment of correspondence installed at their business premises: Wilkens and Feild Hardware Coy, Ltd.,. E. Buxton and Co. Ltd., S. Kirkpatrick and Co. Ltd., Lucas and Son, and the- Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., Ltd. A sacred concert will be held in the Botanical Reserve on Sunday evening by the Citizens' Band, which is .proparing a good programme for the occasion; and magnophone items wul also form part of the programme, lha collection will be in aid of the Band s contest expenses. The Nelson College Old Boys' Football Club are holding their annual general meeting at the Chamber of Conimorce Rooms, Hardy-street, on Wednesday next. All members and intending members are requested to attend. The death is announced of Mits Dora Karsten, who was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. Deceased was for a long period _ connected with the first school which was established in Nelson in- the cany. days of the settlement by the late JUi M. Campbell, and was carried on in a brick building, which stood nc;u where the present Suter Art Gallery is now situated. The school for mai':j years served two, purposes — for t" we-ak days secular education was imparted to those of the early, settlers who desired it, . evening classes being held regularly, while on Sunday religious instruction and Biblical knowledge were imparted to the children. There are still plenty of retidents who have a kindly remembrance of Campbell's School and its faithful band of workers for the good of. the community. After Mr Campbell's death, Miss Karsten, at the head ct an energetic committee carried on 'the Sunday School until^he-property passed to the Nelson Education .Board. Deceased was for many years a member of the Cathedral Choir, and was connected with the Sunday School up to the day of- her death. On Saturday last she attended the "Sunday School picnic, and on the following day surfered from a stroke, which brought to a close her energetic and useful career. Her brothers and sisters will have the sympathy of many citizens. We have received from Messrs Allan and .Co., Ltd., Melbourne, a copy of the Australasian music book, No. 80, a new number, consisting of twenty six popular Irish songs, including the well known, favourites : "Come Back to Erin," . "Dear kittle Shamrock, "Kathleen Ma vourneen," "God Save Ireland," "Dermot Asthore," Cockles and Mussels,"' etc. The music is clearly printed and the book is an ad-mirable-shilling's worth. Mr T. Shaw Valentine is at present showing moving pictures in the country districts before leaving for the North Island.
