SUTER ART SOCIETY.
l- ANNUAL MEETING AND EXHIBI- :•' ii ;■-■ _ c ■ The annual meeting of the Suter Art ■■■ society was held yesterday afternoon <■ in the Suter Art Gallery. It was pre- ■•■ ceded by an exhibition of sketches by '- the. active members" of the Society. ; These were arranged on screens, and: ■ were of considerable interest and en- I ■ joymerit to those present. We had ' ? scarcely time to thoroughly ' inspect ! fe them, but we noticed a good number I from the brush of Mr "\V. H. NicholI son, and these, were all more or less >' enjoyable. Other interesting pictures '■ were by Miss N. Jones, Messrs C. Y. - Fell, Burns, Carter, Mrs Topliss, Miss • Harris etc. Afternoon tea was kindly t supplied by the committee of ladies. -.. '■> At .4.30 the business meeting was II held, the President,' the Right-. Rev. s Dr. Mules, occupying- the chair, c The Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, £ Miss N. Jones, read the report and * balance-sheet, which were adopted. The report stated that the annual": exhibition was neld last October, con- [ sisting of unf rained pictures from Inf vercargill, Christchurch, Wellington, s Napier, Auckland, and other places, . exceeding 300 in number. The exhie bition was open for a week, but the a, attendance of the public .was very disj couraging, less than 100 persons pay- . ing for admission. Consequently there f was a loss of £4 8s 7d, which had to f be met by drawing on the general - fund. • r The usual "at home" and exhibition s of sketches had been held during the past year. Owing to so little interest being taken by' the public in the exhi;l bition, and the lowness of the funds, j no new picture was. added to the col--j lection. The balance-sheet showed that the c amount received in subscriptions from ] members was £29 5s for the year, and v the balance showed that while the Soa ciety had not gone back, it had mado B no real progress financially. The election of officers for the enj. suing year resulted as follows :—Vicefc Presidents: Messrs.jC. Y. Fell and W. l H. Nicholson. Committee: Mesdames Nicholson, Topliss,' Misses Sadd and Igglesden, and Mr Brusewitz. On the motion of Mr Kingsley, Miss N. Jones was re-elected hon. , secretary and treasiireri: - . • * Mr Fell addressed the members on '' the work of last year, dealing with > the non-success of the exhibition held < ? last October. ■ '. > It was suggested that the month of ■ j October was an inopportune time, to i 1 hold the exhibition, and after much •, 1 discussion, the meeting decided that i I in their opinion it was desirable to < : hold another exhibition next year, but < j left the final decision and arrange- ( ■ trients to the committee. 1 Mr G. V; Fell moved a very cordial \ • vote of thanks to Miss Jones for her ■ services, expressing high appreciation J - of her work on behalf of the Society, 3 This was carried wth acclamation. i Mr Kingsley then" asked a question 1 about the effect of light upon the very i valuable water colour pictures in tho . Gallery. ECe thought he saw a slight , deterioration. .'.'.' After some discussion, it was left . to the Commttee to consider the best • 3 means to protect the most valuable b pictures from exposure to strong light. It may not be generally known that , the subscription for a : honor- i 1 iry member is ten shillings per year, • t and one would have thought .that in y a town like Nelson there would have '- i been treble the number of members"* 1 that there apparently are from the 1 3 amount of subscriptions received dur- ,' - ing the past year. )' i<
