RAILWAY EXTENSION.
NELSON-MANU SECTION.
VISIT OF INSPECTION. Yesterday the Minister for J'ußlic Works (Hon. R. MeE&hjsie), visited the railway e'xtefi'sion works beyond ManUi A number of members of the Inland Communication League and Chamber of Commerce, among whom were Messrs J. H. Cock, H, R. Duncan, F. W. Hamilton, R. B." Jackson, G. King, A. A. Lucas, P. Best, L. Kerr, H. Braddell, and H. Baigent, journeyed to Kiwi by the morning train, travelling with the Minister from Kohatu. On arrival at Kiwi, luncheon was partaken of at the Public Works Office, and the party proceeded some three miles further on to the present rail. head in truck's drawn by the ballast engine. On, arrival yehi'cies"-v?er_} in .waiting, and the Minister .tji.cl the Resident Engineer (Mi.. J, S. Harding) and some' members of tho party drove to the Hope river (about seven miles beyond Manu), where a cutting, which will be 46 feet deep and 22 chains long; has heen started. The formation as far as Manu. has been completed, and the rails laid to within a mile of the to\JTiship, this portion of the Imp now being used for tliß transport of material for the eohs*truction of the line. About one hundred and eighty men are at present employed on the works, and this number will be increased in order to facilitate operations at the cutting referred to. This work the Minister expects to have completed in about eighteen months' time. The Hon. Mr McKenzie returned to town last evening with the party, the members of which spent a very pleasant day.
