The balance-sheet showed a very creditable cash balance, and the membership had increased beyond all • expectations. The Lodge was then closed in the usual manner by the W.M., Bro. F.Burt, the brethren and sisters afterwards enjoying S „ o^ lal 'fe >UI l t S.? etller in harmony and song. The -babies were laid irtth all the good things that mortal could wish for. . The singing of the National Anthem, and Auld Lang Syne brought to a close a very enjoyable and succesful gathering of the L.O.L. ISo. 51. >■ ' t - ' • Some comment was caused on Lyt.tekon wharf on Saturday moraine (says the "Lyttelton Times") regarding the manner in which consignments of sides of pork were landed from the SrfST i aoT \' Jhe m eat, which was quite fresh had been shipped at WeUington direct from the slaughter bouse. There was no covering of any sort on the pork, which was carried m the vessel's fore hold along with other stores. In unshipping .the consignment the sides of pork were placed in a not very clean net, and were landed on a dirty tarpaulin on the deck. Thence they, were shot down a wooden slide into one of the large insulated trucks usuaUy used to carry frozen mutton. The sides of pork by the time they reached tbe truck had picked up a good deal of dirt, and the manner in whicli they wero carried in the ship's hold along with the other cargo did not improve them. A pitiful incident, which has in it something of a tragedy, occurred at Foxton races, says., the Palmerston "Times." A' tottering old man, the curse of whose life had been gambling — he was at one time a wealthy man, but is now practically, without means — put on a few pounds he possessed on Toa Tuhi. The horse finished second and paid a sensational price. The old man was naturally elated at his win. Joyfully and with a renewed spring in his step and light in his eye he made his way to the "tote," and with shaking hands aollected his dividend. Placing the notes in the inner pocket of his old coat he wandered away, turning oyer in his mind all he would do with it. and dreaming dreams of turning in the tide -of his luck. A short while afterwards he felt for his wad of notes — it was gone, spirited away, and with it his. all too brief dream. He had been "gone through" hy a mean racecourse thief , who probably rejoiced over the "soft thing" he had struck. The Wellington Harbour Board, under legislation passed last session, is empowered to borrow £1,000,000 in a single loan or a series of loans, but the raising of money so far has been deferred on bankers' advice.
