NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The Hittites. Prof essor "John GaTstang, at the rooms of the Asiatic Society in London recently spoke of the result of excavations which he had carried out in Asia Minor during the last two years. <He referred especially to information which had come, to light regarding the Hittites, who, he said, were no single nation, but a confederacy of peoples of different races and origin united against the Pharaohs. One of the sculptures was interesting to Scotsmen, it being the first representation of a man playing bagpipes, accompanied by a person who was obviously playing the banjo. The crescent and rose figured prominently in Hittite sculpture, and: he considered that that had given rise to the present Turkish star and: crescent. Going amongst the people at the present dayie' was forced to realise that he was in the presence of living Hittites, owing to the likeness between the people of to-day and the faces portrayed by the ancient sculptors.
