A SEAMAN BADLY INJURED

: Wellington, Feb. 1. Ai serious accident-occurred^ before one -o'clock to-day on-;- this. s.s. PateenaV which'twas at the time just drawing away from the wharf for Pictbn and Nelson. She was on the Jinside of the first tee, on the south 'side; of the wharf,- and on the arrival of a'■ late comer. Captain Stewart gave orders for ttie'stern line (which 'was df wire) to be kept taut, in order that ithe vessel should be drawn towards the wharf, and the late comer be taken on board. ■•• This induced a tremendous strain on the hawser, as it was the only' one that' was holding -the vessel: An able seaman, named John Macey; was' just stooping down to attend to the wire, when it siiddenly snappedj" : and_ a parted end &truck him on the side of the head| / and felled him to the deck. He- was taken-: ashore, and Drs. Henijy and r Pigeon were summoned to: attend to his injuries.
