The: Lord Mayor invited-- the Cardinal to send sums collected in the Catholic Church to the Lord Mayor's Italian fund, stating this course nad been followed by other denomi - nations.
Cardinal Moran wrote to the Lord Mayor declining the request, and pointing -out that charitable aid from private sources had been enabled ' to. alleviate distress in cases that would otherwise ■ have been' overlooked by publio offioials. " In*, publio charities a good deal of the funds was spent in the salaries of secretaries and agents, while not in • frequently it also happened that some individuals insinuated themselves into the administration of these funds who did not enjoy the confidence of the Catholic body. gocb cases wero not. -unlmown in Australia. .
The .Lord Mayor says he was pained to receive suoh a letter from the Cardinal. He bad only one object id view. It was no question of nationality or creed, but of humane ity and sympathy. Tile response to bis appeal had been magnificent, and there was every reason t to believe fiat the oitizens were proud of the noble services the committee bad rendered in gathering the fund. He declined a suggestion to send a further letter to the Cardinal on the subject, and preferred to leave the publio to form its own conclusions. : •■'
