The town was practically deserted, aa ; the reports which follow|show, there were . large gatherings at tne • various fixtures arranged, while the favourite resorts of Tabu ha and the Maitai Valley 'were thronged with picnickers. The Sands at Tahuna presented a very animated soene, some hundreds of youngsters disporting in the shallow waters, and if demonstration waa needed to prove what n magnificent assei this spot is to the city, there was abundance yesterday. There was sufficient breeze to temper the heat somewhat, and the youngsters, vigorous and wholesomely browning, were evidently enjoying themselves to the full. The motor service conveyed great numbers to Tahuna, and was much appraciated.

Thi Maitai Valiey presented quite a different scene, the majority" of the pleasure seekers in this resort seeking the grateful shade of tbe trees, or, what vvas still more tempting, bathiqg in the numerous pools. § The picnickers were astir early, the Catholic party, journeying by the 7.45 am. tram, and they were followed by the Presbyterian, Church of Christ, and Stoke Methodist parties, v numbering altogether ovbp 1200. The' traffic in wards from the country was not heavy until the abovn picnickers began to return, the 7.30 p.m. tram being particularly heavy. The day passed off full of pleasure, which was greatly enhanced by the most pertect weather.

As a pleasant final to the day's amusements the Garrison Band gave a concert in the Botanical Reserve, The following programme was much appreciated by a fair attendance, who not on]y enjoyed the excellent music hut tbe coolness of the b«autiful evening. — "Punjaub," Cbas Payne; waltz — "Bed of Hoses, " Keller;, selection— ' ' Meyerber, " H. Round ; euphonium solo—" Asleep in the Deep." Petrie ; march — "North Starj " Rimmer ; selection — ' ' Mercadante, ' ' H. Round; marcn— "PunohineUo, " Kimraar.
