CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
THE NEW CITY CLUB,
The new premises for the members of the City Club, iv Selw3*u Place, near the Church Hill are practically completed, and the formal opening ceremony will take place iv a few days' time. The building, which is a two-storey one, is a handsome structure, and is. fitted with every modern convenience, the comfort ,of mombors .. having heen studied in every way. To the right of the vestibule, on the ground f100r,. -is the strangers' room, 17ft by 13ft, and to the left a sitting-room of the . same size. The vestibule, opens into a spacious hall, 14ft by 12ft, adjoining which is the billiard-room. 27ft by 22ft, on one side, and the 'bar, 20ft, by 20ft< on the other side, while at the back is a large room, 27ft by 18ft, which" will be used for meetings and social gatherings. A stairway, leads from the hall to the second floor, where arc located, several sitting rooms, two of which are 21ft by 17ft, and one 17ft hy 13ft; and tho library and reading-room, 27ft .by 17ft. Lavatories are provided oil both .floors, and there is a balcony on the front of the building overlooking the Church Hill, and another on tlie ground floor off the billiardroom. Electric bells are fitted in all the rooms, which are well lighted and ventilated,, and when completely furnished, the new club liouse should be much appreciated by the members. Tho plans were prepared by Mr Henry JLeaper, and the building was erected b3> Messrs Leaper Bros., the sub-contractors being Messrs Savage and Sons (painting and paperhanging), Nelson Tinware. Co., Ltd. (plumbing),;, and: ;Mr T.._ T Grimmett (bricklaying, etc.).
("The Colonist," Dec. 15.)' Tho formal opening of tlio new City Club premises took place last evening, when there was a large attendance of members and friends. The proceedings took the form of a social gathering, over which the President, Mr Ernest E. Trask, presided. A number of toasts were honored, including "Tho City Olub." "The President," and "Tho Visitors and the Press." Refreshments were l)ro vided, and an excellent programme of songs:, instrumental items, recitations, etcf, was given. The members were heartily congratulated upon securing such fine promises, a brief description of which was published in these -columnsa few days ago. During the evening Mr Clrarles Lamb, on behalf of the members, in a felicitous speech, ]>resented Mr E.- Trask with a handsome silver tea and coffee service as a mark of appreciation of his services during his several terms of offico as j President, and more * "especially-* •in connection with his efforts to -secure a new Club horfse, . The toast>was drunk with musical yhonours. ... Mr Trask, in acknowledging the presentation, stated that he was taken completely by surprise. He thanked the members very heartily for their, token of appreciation, and said that equal credit was due to the members of the Committee^ for what had been done 'in connection with the j building. A very pleasant evenincl terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and the National An-I them. ' I
