Wellington, Deo. 9. . Dr Cockayne bas been instructed by tba Government -to make a comprehensive report 6a the best way for dealing with drifting sand, which in some places ia threatening to become a serious danger, especially on the coast between Patea and PaebaKariki, just north of Wellington. It is stated that over 90,000 acres in Wellington alone "are threatened wich destruction. Something -has been doae. with marram grass, lupins and ice-plant, but it is aot comprehensive enough. The; planting of pines, especially jack pines, has been found effective^ in America.

Dr. Cockayne is at present at work near Bulls, and after completing investigations in the Manawatu district .will go further North.
