The by-election for Hastings, owing to the resignation of Mr Harry dv Cros (C. }, resulted in the return of Mr Arthur dv Cros. a suu of the retiring member (Unionist), by 4495 votes, ivlr R. Vernon Harcourt (Libeial) polled 3477. Mr dv Cros attributes his victory to his attitude on the tariff reform question, particularly colonial preference.
