CONSERVATIVE GATHERING.
PRESENTATION TO MR MASSEY. Auckland, Feb. 18. There was a gathering of over 4000 people at Helbretia ostrich farm on Saturday, the occasion being a gar den party tendered to Mr VV. F. Massey, M.P., the Leader of the Opposition. A presentation was made by his constituents of a silver salver, a rose bowl, and a tea and coffee service. 'Mr Massey is taking the opportunity later of replying to Sir J. G. Ward, so he confined bis address to what be called the very real danger before *he country, in the struggle between Socialists and an ti -Socialists. Mr Lang, M. P., said the Government policy was one to compromise, and he referred to the land legislation and the Gaming Bill. Mr Mander, M.P., and Mr Bollard, M.P., spoiie ..mainly regarding Socialism, and Mr Monk, the mem. ber for Waitemata, dwelt at length on freehold versus leasehold. The other speakers were Mr A. E. Harding, who is to be Opposition candidate for Kaipara, and Captain Bell, the Opposition candidate for Waikato.
