ATTEMPTED BALLOON ASCENT.

Invercargill, January 29. The lnvercargill people have been looking forward with curiosity to the projected balloon ascent by K. Mime, a cycle dealer of this towu, which was to nave taken place to-day. Murie has had some experience of bal looning in the Old Country. He made the balloon, and was having it filled with coal gas preparatory to ascending this afternoon when thei feed pipe from the gas works leaked. In endavouring to repair., the defect, a man named Gilchrist was partially asphyxiated, and he bad to go to the hospital, where he is recovering. A further attempt to inflate resulted in splitting the balloon and the abandonment of the ascend Murie, uowever, is prepared to try again.
