-i ard and the School Committee. He noted that over £2500 required for erecting the building had come out of the Board's ordinary revenue, as the Government did not contribute one penny in the way of a grant. He said the school was a handsome edifice, exhibiting the beauty of architecture, but the playground needed some levelling, and some ornamentation was needed in the front, and the parents and friends would be called upon to help in that work. He referred to educational advantages as compared to what they ; were in the 'past, when the scholars took a weekly dole for the payment of tho teacher. He hoped the young people would take every advantage of the education provided for them, and prayed the building would long be used as a public school, and the efficient training of the young. Mr Maginnity then opened the main door of the building and invited the people to enter and inspect the various class rooms. After the inspection, the company assembled in the front class room nearest to Collingwood street, when the Rev. J. H.MacKenzie, on behalf of the Town Schools Committee, thanked the Government for exchanging the Toi Toi Valley site for the Sfaelbourne street one. Tho latter was an ideal one for a school, being bright and sunny. He thanked the ltoatd for providing the necessary funds for the erection of the fine building. The architect and builders also deserved thanks for their good work. Ho joined \Mr Maginnity in hoping the school ..would long do good edncational work for the girls of Nelson. Mr Maginnity said the architect was a young man, but he (Mr Griffin) was creeping up the ladder, and the beautiful archihtectural> building which they had just opened showed the selection of the Board of an architect was a good one. Messrs Robertson Bros., like their father who precaded them in the business, said Mr Maginnity, were noted for putting good and faithful work in the buildings they erectedi The present building bore evidence of their honest work, and the best of workmanship. Their thanks were due to Griffin, the architect, and to Messrs Robertson Bros., the builders. At ttie close of the ceremony, the Rev. J. H. and iVlrs MacKenzie entertained a large party at -afternoon tea.
