ACTION FOR LIBEL AND SLANDER.

" Wellington, August 19. At the civil sittings of the Supreme Court to-day Michael Bee Demuth, clerk, of Wellington, claimed _400 damages from St. George A. Dowsin, a clerk in the Land and Income Tax Department, Wellington, for libel and slander. It was asserted that last December the defendant told one, William Lingard,. that his (defendant's) daughter aged 16, had been taken from the custody of her parents and induced by the plaintiff to enter into clandestine correspondence, and otherwise rebel against the authority of her parents. The defendant asked tbat plaintiff be dismissed from the employ of Messrs Lingard and 00. The defendant also wrote to Lingard and Co., saying he intended taking criminal proceedings against the i plaintiff. The court awarded £50 damages,. with costs on the lowest scale.
