A BURNING STEAMER.
Fremantle, August -19. Arrived— -steamer Seydlitz.' She reports sighting on the llth inst. , in lat. 5 deg. 28 mm. south, long. 90 degs3s mins. east, tbe Currie Line steamer Fortunatus ablaze, with deck all burned out, but still watertight. She had a. strong list to port, and was flying signals of distress, the flags reading, "We want help. " The Seydlitz got close up, , but it was impossible to board. It was seen that all the boats rerei missing. A sharp ook-out was kept I for several 'days, but. nothing was, seen of the castaways. The captain I of the Seydlitz considers that the burning vessel is a great dan- er to navigation as a derelict in, the direct track' from Colombo to Fremantle. Probably the vessel will float for a long time, as she is in the region of calms. Received August 20, 0.36 a.m. Sydney, August 19. The Fortunatus' cargo was valued at £100,000. All the leading marine offices are involved. She had at least 2000 tons of tea aboard.
