WRECK OF THE KAWATIRI.
Hobart. August 15. Tbo rescue of the crew of the Steamer Kawatiri, who remained aboard, was a brave act. When the hope of rescuing them had been almost abandoned* six men manned a lifeboat and ,made gallant attempts to reach the steamer; ; but each time the/ were carried away, .by mountainous seas, a nd their lives were imperillled. Their desperate bravery, however, was rewarded by success at last. The struggle^ to reach tha men was long and terrible and the men were spent when their taak was 'accomplished, i It ia alleged that when the first boat of thb' Kawatiri, with the women and children, reached the breakwater, two foreigners, members of the crew, jumped ashoro and made off, regardless of the cries of the women and children. Mrs Hooper was the wife of an assistant at the lighthouse.- She and her' children were drowned within sight of their home. Mrs East, a passenger, was badly bruised while landing. Tho stewardess. Mrs Hoanitt, was the oldest stewardess in the Australian trade, and had spent almost a life time between Melbourne and Tasmanian ports.
