The High Commissioner's cable states that the mutton market is firm. The stocks on hand are light and firmly held in a few hands. Cantirtury mutton 4?gd, North Island 4d. The lamb market is firm, and there is good demand for all classes. The stocks on hand are moderate. Canterbury, 5%d ; other than Canterbury. s*4d. The beef market is quiet but firm at 3%d and 3*£ d per 1b for hindquarters and fores respectively, / The supplies of American chilled beef on hand are small. The butter market is quiet butsteady. The prospects for next season are doubtful. Ati present everyone 19 included to hold back as long as possible, thereby forcing the market price down. Choicest New Zealand, 995; Danish, 109s; Siberian, 925; Irish, 100s per cwt. Large supplies are coming forward. \ The cheese market is steady, and a good demand is experienced. Canadian supplies ate likely to increase. New Zealand, 61a; Canadian white, 57s and colored 58s. The hemp market is quiet, with a tendency in favor of buyers. Reports .from Manila indicate tbat heavy shipments are expected from there. Good fair on spot, £35 10s; fair grade, £30 10s; July-Sep-tember shipments, good fair grade, £34 10s, fair £30. Fair currentManila, on tbe spot, £36. The cocksfoot soed market is firm. Buyers, however, have been offeringmore freely, and bright 171 b seed 13 quotedjat 58s per. cwt. The current quotations -for Bradford tops are 36's, low crossbreds, Is 3f£d ; 40'S) low crossbreds, Is i^d » 44's, medium crossbred, Is s>^d : 50' a, halfbreds, Is 9d ; 56's, quarterbreds, 2s 0)£d : 60's, merinos, 2s 4d per lb.
