MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Yesterday, before Mr H. Eyre Kenny, S.M., Frederick Sowman was charged on the information of the Inspector of Stock with having fed pigs -on raw meat contrary to the provisions of the Slaughtering Inspection Act. The defendant pleaded' guilty, and stated that he was not aware that it was an offence to feed raw meat to pigs.
The Bench inflicted a fine •of £2, with 7s costs.
Arthur Stratford was fined 10s, with 7s costs for riding a bicycle after sunset without a light. The following persons were each fined ss, with 7s costs in each case, for riding their bicycles on footpaths, namely Gilbert Leach, V. H. Trask, G. L. Sadd, Thomas Doidge, Harry Clark, Kenneth Watson, Harry Leaper, Austin M. Bisley, George Clark, Rene Gill, Terrence Malone, John Richards/Frank Hart, Charles Beberfield, A. "F. Gilbert, and James Alexander.
' James Grant was charged by the Inspector of Factories with having employed W. G. Braddock before four o'clock on the morning of June 29th.
Mr Richmond Fell appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Atkinson for the defendant.
Mr Fell stated that the information was laid under Section 4 of the Shop and Offices Act, Amendment Act, 1985. Inspector Tyson gave evidence that he visited defendant's bakehouse about 3.30 a.m. on June 29th, and shortly after Braddock arrived and commenced to get water for mixing the dough. In cross-examination be said the bakehouse in question was registered as a factory. Mr Atkinson contended the information should have been laid under the Factories Act, and not under the Shops and Offioes Act Amendment Act. He called the defendant who stated the hours that Braddock worked, he being the junior baker he' had to assist in taking out tho bread. j
Mr Fell drew attention to Clause sof the Shops and Offices Act, and contended that the latter Act and the Factories Act were to be taken together. The Bench reserved judgment.
