NELSON GOLF CLUB.
OPENING OF THE NEW CLUB
HOUSE.
The weather was fine for tho formal opening of the Nelson Golf Club's new club house at Tahuna, w'tH'ch took place on on 'July 6 in t'fao. presence of about one hundred and fifty people. Mr A. P. Burnes, tbe captain of the club, in an interesting speech, gave a short history of the Nelson Oolf Club since itsl inception and referred to the small beginnings at Tahuna when a box was large enough to contain the clubs of the six or seven members io 1898, and.pointed to the new house caoable of housing members to the number of 150. He referred to the late Mr Tinline, who had urged tho club to buy the property (about 105 acres ) and lent the full amountj on mortgage, and also presented the club with £20 to make the present road (Parker's) to trie links fit for traffic. He also referred to the generosity of Mr J. 11. Cock, who had always taken an interest in the game of golf, and who had, by substantial donations, furthered the making of the road and the success of the game. Mr Burnes apologised jorjjthe unavoidable absence _bf Mr Fell, their energetic Secretary, Mr Griffin, the architect, and Mr John Scott, the builder. Afternoon ten was provided by Mrs Burnes, and the new club bn i-,o was admired by all as most suitable a*nd convenient. A photograph of the house and those present was then taken, and before dispersing, Mr J. H. Cock referred to the untiring energy of Mr and Mrs Burnes in fostering the interest in golf, and three hearty cheeis were accorded Mr and Mrs Burnes.
