NELSON LAND BOARD.

Tbe monthly meeting of this Board was held on Thursday lastPresent: Commissioner F,\V. Flanagan, and MessrsWratt, Lynch, Walker, and Sinclair.

Applications for cash lands were dealt with as follows: Two applications were received for sections 39, 35 block iv, and sections 34. 31 block viii, Wai-iti, 868 acres, at 6s per acre.- Resolved that Mr Geo. Shirt* liffe's appWcation, the first received, be granted, he having given] an indemnity against any claim being made for road access. — John Hudson, section 2, block viii Howard, 23a 2r, formerly Scenic reserve lately released from reservation. Granted under section 240 of "ThelLand'Act, 1892," at JBl-per acre.

Applications for Lease in Perpetuity were dealt with as follows : Daniel Walker applied for 150 acres block iv, Waifcapu, and .220 acres block'ii. Applicant being ineligible to bold two sections not contiguous under L.I. P. tenure, tbe Board resolved to grant him the option of selecting either of the sections applied for. P. H. Bromell, 200 acres, block vi, Tadmor, granted, the price" to be fixed after a report is obtained as to the quality of the land. Her bert Smith, section 12, block viii, Kaiteriteri, 325 acres, price 6s per acre, granted j Wm. Holy, 540 acres, block vii, Kongahu, price 13s 3d per acre, postponed ; Willim Seawell, 500 acres, block iii, Matiri, price 6s per acre, granted ; same, 650 acres blocks iii and iv, Matiri, price 9s per acre, granted ; Sidney B. Hodges, 150 acres, block xv, Mount Arthur, price 6s por acre, granted ; on applications J. H. Croawell, sections 11 and 13, block i," Inangahua, 500 acres, and M. C. Drummond, sections 36, 46 and 47, block xi, Motueka, it was resolved that the Minister for Lands be recommended to throw these sections open for selection.

Applications for pastoral licenses were dealt with as follows: Henry Carey, senr., 450 acres, block ii, Ngakawau, adjourned for Warden's report : J. Scholefield jnr. ,200 acres, Matakitaki Survey District, refused, area gapplied for being reported by Warden to be auriferous and payable country; John Walsh, 640 acres, block vii, Waitahu, postponed until Progress Gold Sluicing Company is communicated with in reference to reservation for the protection of their water race; George JbJatird, 225 acres, block iii, Mawheraiti, adjourned, pending report from District Surveyor as to amount of land available for settlement in the locality; R. L. Kearns, 45 acres, block xiii, Recfton, refused, the Warden reporting that the land was required for mining and residential purposes. A petition was also read from twenty five miners resident in the locality objectingl to [.the application.

Applications for M.D.L.O. leases were dealt with as follows: John Ratcliffe, 5 acres, block x, Mokihinui. granted, subject to rent being Gxed by the Board and survey fee being deposited by applicant ;- W. R. Simpson, s|acres, block vi, Otumahana, refused, the Warden stating that mining is going on in the vicinity; J. Allen, section 3,- blook ix, Waitabere, 20a 3r 17p, rent assessed at £1 per annum; J. Q. Scarlett, 5 acres block vi, Otumahana, postponed pending the location of site for township on the road to Mount Radiant. It •ws aresolved to dispense with the survey fees on certain sections. -.

Applications for occupation licenses were dealt With as follows: John Evans, Ferry Reserve, section 3, block iii, Kongahu, 100 acres, declined, area being undsr control of Buller County Council; George Broughton, part section 6, block xii, JVlawheraiti, 126a 3r 20p r postponed, pending receipt of advertisement. Applications for Crown grants were dealt with as follows : F. G. Gibbß, cash land selection 59, block iv, Aorere, 73a^ 2r 3p, postponed for

Porthouse and J, Brough for permission- to acquire portions of stock reserve fronting their holdings in Big Bush blook so as to enable them to gain road frontage to the main top house road and provide sites for homesteads.— The Board approved the application and resolved to recommend the Minister for Lands to insert a clause in a Ressrves Dis~ posal, Bill, etcj, releasing an area of 40 acres of the stock reserve so as to effect the purpose, of thd applicant. It was resolved tt fix the annual rental of ferry reserve seotion 8, blocfc xi, Wai-iti, 46a 3r 24p at £8 per annum, and load the reserve with the sum of £42 for improvements belonging to the Crown and £25 iapprovements effected by Mr Biggs. Mr J. Smith's appplication for permission to cut timber for a short period over area at Cape Foulwind was referred to the ranger for report. Resolved that Mr R. Molloy's appliction for exemption of^residence on M.D.L.O. lease, Reef ton, be refused and lessee informed that he must | fence and reside on area within|three months or his lease will be cancelled without further notice, and that no timber must be sold or carted off the land after the Ist August. Resolved that sections in blocks viii and xii Inaogabua, and ii, iii, v, ti, ix, Reeftdn Survey district, 1067 acres* be opened for settlement on L.1.P., and the Bush andSwamp Crown Land.^Settlement 'Acts On letter from B; A. Rogers, iri reference to lease of section 234, block vi, Reef ton, 5J acres, it was resolved that the Board will consider an application for a pastoral license, the Warden having objected to open the land under L*I.P. Mrs J. S. Thomas applied for exemption from residence for six months on L"I.P. sections, blocks vii and viii, Matiri,and to have part of scenic reserve 256 acres adjoiningadded to the lease.— -Resolved that the Board does not consider it advisabli to recommend it being discharged from reservation as it is one of the beauty spots on 'the Buller road; and that applicant be permitted to commence her residence from Ist January, 1908. Mr Joseph Cochrane wrote in reference to seleoting 200 acred in block ii, Wangapeka-— Resolved that the Board will consider an application for an occupation license over the area in question. The Crown Lands Ranger recommended'that 5400 acres in t locks ix and xiii, Aoreri and xii and xvi Wakaiiarama Survey districts be thrown open for settlement. — Resolved that the Minister for Lands be recommended to throw these blocks open jor settlement tinder L.I. P. and Bush and Svsamp Crown Lands Settlement Act.

The Warden intimated that owing to* numerous applications for residence sites it might be necessary to resume areas held under ooapation license in the township of Hector. It was resolved k that certain tenants x ?bo are in arrear with lent be notified that unless the rents are. paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue on or before the Augnst, that leases will be canoelled without further notice. It was resolved to recommend the Minister for Lands to take steps to withdraw from reservation section 13, 25, 26 and 28, block x, Wai-iti Survey district, arid section 24 block Vi of the same district, containing 535M acres under the "New Zealand Forests Act Amendment Act, 1888 " and to release sections! and 11 block iii, Wai4ti district, from reservation by special legislation. The timber on these lands has been burned out and it was considered desirable tofeet the country into profitable occupation. The Crown LandH Ranger reported in proposed scenic reserve, 300 acres block v, Wangamoa. —Resolved to recomiriendjthat the area be reserved for scenic purposes. An application was received from the Oollingwood County Council for 4 acres 2r 32p, block vi, Pakawau, to be reseaved and placed under their control.— Resolved that the Board canot acoede to the Council 's request, as the land may be required for tramway and other purposes connected with coal mining. , A scheme for the expenditure of "thirds" was submitted by the Riwaka Road Board, which was approved and the amount £40 13s 9d named ordered to be paid to the credit of the Board. Mr* A. Washbourne's application for renewal of mineral lease over section 122, square 14, Waitapu, 56a Or 36p, was declined. Mr Thos, Corcoran wrote requesting that his application for soenic reserve 21 acres, section 9, block iii, Kawatiri, which was declined at the Board's meeting of 11th April be reconsidered.— The Board decided that it could not see its way to comply with the request. A number of applications for transfers were approved and one was adjourned. The Takaka County Council's request that a suitble area of 10 acres in Mr J. S. Harwoode's L.I. P. holding in blocks xii and xv, Takaka and xiv Kaiteriteri be reserved as a resting place for travelling stools was granted. The Board then rose.
