MAITAI V. NELSON. A championship match was played in the Botanical Reserve on Saturday afternoon 'between [the Maitai and Nelson Clubs, and resulted in a win for the latter by one goal to nil. In the first half the Maitai had the bettei of the game, and were continuously in the Nelson circle. Nelson put in a few good rushes, and took the ball back :at times, but Maitai were never in any danger The first spell ended without a score. Shortly after half time King got away with the ball, and by a clever piece of individual play dp^ve the ball between the poEfcß. /jYTaitai then set to work and had all the better of the game, and were in the Nelson circle three parfca of the time, but were prevented from scoring by the Nelson backs hitting the ball over the line, when they were in danger. Nelson showed no hockey whatever in the second pell, except a few of tne forwards, the backs, who were "on the defen sive, driving the ball over the side line a considerable distance to gain time after they had once scored. For the winners Hurst, King and Anstice put in a good deal of superior play while G. Stewart at fgoal was very safe. The Maitai forwards who Splayed well were Kitching, SpriDg, anJ Millar, while Croudis and Hawkesworth put in some good play. Edwards and Ferry, at half did their share of work. Cioudig had the misfortune to get a nasty smaok in the eye with the ball near the end of the game, but did not discontinue playing. The Nelson captain generously offered to allow a substitute to go on in the place of Croudis. Messrs R. Neal and G. Wimsett carried the whistles, and acted very impartially, but both should impose penalties for breaches of the rules.
