Break Down on Railway. — Shortly after the evening train left Nelson on Juoe 17 news was received of the collapse of the engine and the train having been brought to a standstill near Bishopdale. No time was lost in disconnecting the driving gear of the engine which became useless owing to the crank snapping off close to the driving wheel, owing, it is alleged, to the severe frost affecting the parts. Upon receipt of" the news a rescue engine was got ready and taken to the scene and it brought the disabled train and engine back to Nelson. Meanwhile an! engine was got in readiness to resume the journey, which was recommenced in a short space of time, resulting in the passengers being taken home wish comparatively little delay. This was better than the recent mishap up North when the passengers had to spend most of the night in the carriage. Nelson Rifles. — After the parade of this corps on Monday evening, a meeting of members was held for the purpose of electing a lieutenant. There were two candidates, but the tesult was not sufficiently satisfactory according to the regulations, and the election was held over, '
