TAPAWERA LITERARY SOCIETY.
Members of the Tapawera Literary Society met on May 29fch, and the subjeot for discussion, "Is the Hoo McNab's Land Policy Worthy of Our Support?' was debated vdry keenly. Mr George Macmahon opene3 the debate in the affirmative, and in doing so pointed out the many advantages of holding leasehold property, and of the good use the Government make of money obtained by these leases. Mr H. In nea Jones also spoke strongly in. favor of the Bill, his chief arguments in its favor being that of its socialistic tendency which he declared Should be encouraged in New Zealand. Mr |J. Rollett, of Sherry, was present to oppose Mr Macmahon's argument. He pointed out the advantages of freehold properties, and the tendency of leasehold encouraging a land gambling effect. Altogether, Mr Rollett spoke very plainly against the McNab policy, comparing it to "the hand-writing on the wall," which foretells the fall of the present Government. Dr Hudson spoke in favor of small freehold holdings, and Messrs Moffatfc, Drummond, Faulkner and Smith were also in favor of freehold properties, and therefure against the Land Bill. Upon a show of hands bein/? taken it wan seen that an almost unanimous vote was given to the effect that "The Hon. McNab'a Land Policy" is not worthy of our support. Dr Hudson was elected Chiannan. for the meeting of June sth, which is to be in the form of an entertainment evening. The meeting dosed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
