NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING,, The monthly nieeting of the Boflfd was commenced yesterday. Present: Messrs xVlagmnity (chairman), Beuke, Smith, Lock, Franklyn, and Baigeut. Owing to the steamer being delayed by bad weather on the West Coast, Messrs Baillie, Fair and Shepherd were not present. Minutes were read and confirmed. Leave of absence was granted the West Coast members. The Chairman reported in refereuce to . the teacher's house at Collingwood. He recommended tbryt trees be foiled, gravelling done, and minor improvements effected. The Chairman's action was approved. The Treasurer's statement was laid before the Hoard as follows :— Cash current account, £376 13s 9d; fixed deposit, £2000: total, £2376 13s 9d; less unpresented chequed, £368 18s sd. Cr. balance, £2007 iSs 4d. General account, debit balauo9, £590 Os Id. Building account: Cr. balance, £2538 9s lid ; grants advised £3600; total, £6138 9s lid, less unliquidated votes, £2966; amount available, £3.172 9s lid; contractors'' deposits, £59 5s 6d. The tender of Mr Geo. .Robertson at £35 8s (being the only one) for additions to the teacher's house at Brightwater, was accepted. Mr Geo. Jacobs' tender of £8 13s for painting the central room a.t Haven road was accepted. In reference to the Town Schools Committee's complaint as to ths Boards allocation of the special allowance, the Board carried the following resolution: That the ariangement for tne distribution of the special grant of 9d .per head WS3 made under instructions of the Department, and the amount for the Nelson schools worked out at £21 5s 2d, and was the amount to whioh the Committee was entitled under the scheme. The tender of Mr D. Panckhurstof £24 for the erection of a chimney at Reef ton was accepted. The Fire Inspector at Reefton wrote in reference to the condition of another chimney at the school, and it was resolved to ask the Reefton Committee to report. Mr Smith having reported, it was resolved that tenders be called for 1 cleaning the old Library building at Spring Grove,|and to accept si tender for a lavatory at Richmond* £2 103 to be oranted for additional basins in the vhls lavatory. Mies Tendall wrote in reference to the establishment of cookery classes fit Takaka, and it was decided to ask tbe Takaka Committee if instruction was required, and to for ward particulars as to probable attendance, etc* Grants were made as follows 1 — Wesfcport, £7 for range; Nelshri Technical School, £2 for heating purposes; Tapawera, £2 for table and lock; Land of Promise, general overhaul and repairs, £9; .Brighton, £1 5s for stove pipe; Bircbfteld, £1 for barga boards; Tadmori £3 for painting fence; Upper Moutere, £7 10a for icpairs to house; Little Grey, £10 for repairs, including, £i for fencing;. Dr Hudson applied for loan of anatomy charts.—Granted. Applications for teacherships were dealt with as follows: Denniston (pupil teacher), 3 i pplioat'onSj name of Miss Nellie Smith to be forwarded :• Charleston, (pupil ted- ti cher), 3 applications* names of Jn/tr Merton C. Gibbs, and MisS Annie 1 Hartill to be forwarded; Nelson Girls' (pupil teacher), seven replications, Constance Palme, Janet Johnston, Alice Railed, 'J. H. D. Symes, Katherine Redgrave,and Merton C\ Gibbs to be forwarded in the order nanioJ ; "Woodstock (sole tercher) 3 applications, names of Mr Mertoa C. Gibbs, Misses Iris Scott, cud Miry Ci Larkin to be forwarded in order named; Globe Hill (Sole teacher), 2 applications, Miss Evelyn Dwyer's name to be forwarded; Seddonville (assistant teacher), 3ap plications, Miss Teresa Rasinussen's name to be forwarded; Churchill (sole teacher), 3 applications Miss Ada Snook's name to be forwarded ; Awriiti, (sole teacher), 5 applications, Mis' 3H. Aga'iha Gibbs 1' name* to he forw: rded; Takaka District High School, 2 applications, Miss Emma F. Ainsworth's name to be forwarded. Resolved to inform the Town Committee that the Board regrets that it is unable to pay the account forwarded for printing ballot papers. Resolved that the Board's architect report on defects at Hampden Street School. Tbe Board then rose, and will resume at ten this morning.
