Mr Millar arrived last night for the purpose of opening the Home for the Aged and Infirm just erected in Park Island, a pleasantly situated site across tbe inner harbour, at a total cost of land and buildings about £12,000, towards which grant of only £500 was made by tbe Governmen.t The weather" was beautifully fine for the ceremony, and there was a large attendance of the public. Lyttelton, March 6. Robert McCarthy and Stephen Maxwell, who escaped from the hard labour gang at Lyttelton on 7th February, were charged before Mr Bishop, 3. M. , at Lyttelton Ihie morning with escaping from legal • coustody. They pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to 12 months' im-
prisonment, concvirrent wifcti their present terms. Dunedin, March 6 Three cottages on Maori Hill were burned down shortly after midnight. The fire originated . in premises owned by Mr D. Frame and occupied by Mrs Rogers, who, with her child, escaped through a window. The two adjoining houses were occupied by Mr William Smeaton and Mr Qoode, a West Coast traveller for Begg and Co. The insurances on Mr Frame's house was £100 in the New Zealand Offices, and on Mrs Rogers' furniture £201 in the Atlas Office. Wanganui, March 6 Last night a cable waa sent to Towns (world's champion sculler) by a committee of local rowing enthusiasts inquiring whether he will row Webb (New Zealand's champion) for the world's championship, and when, and what expenses he will allow the New Zealander.
