THE PREMIER ENTERTAINED AT WELLINGTON.
APPOINTMENTS TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL January 24. Sir. J. G. Ward was entertained tonight at a valedictory social on the eve of bis departure to attend the Conference of Premiers at London. The gathering took place at the Parliament Building and was very largely attended. The Mayor of Wellington, the Hon T W Hislop, preided. Sir Joseph, who was received with loud applause, said the revenue for the last nine months exceeded that for the same period of last year by £612,418, and he estimated that the surplus to credit on March 3lst would be £529.795. Speaking with reference to the position of the Legislative Council he said that of fourteen recent vcancies live members had been North Island representatives and nine South Island. ■ In their recommendations to the Governor the Ministry had proposed that eight should be appointed from the North Island and six from the South. , The appointments that had been made were as follows: Mr W W McCardle, farmer, of Kawhia; Captain W H Tucker, farmer Gisborne; O Samuel, lawyer, of New Plymouth ; Dr W E Collins, Wellington ; C M Luke, iron manufacturer Wellington*; Hamilton Gilmer, Wellington; Robert Loughnan journalist, Wellington : George W Smith ex-M.H.R. Christchruch ; John Rarr, President of the Trades and Labour Council, Christchurch : John Anstey, farmer, Otipua, Thnaru; J R Sinclair, lawyer, Dunedin: T Paul, compositor, Dunedn ; J B Callan. lawyer, Dunedin: Wi Fere, Gisborne.
