THE PREMIER ENTERTAINED AT WELLINGTON.
APPOINTMENTS TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Wellington, JanUat'y 24. Sir J. G. "Ward was entertained tonight, at a valedictory social on the eve .bf his departure to attend the Conference of Premiers at London . The gathering took place at the " Parliament Building and was very largely attended. The Mayor of Wellington, the Hon T W Hislop, • preided. Sir Joseph, who was. receiv- :, ed" with loud applause, said the i- revenue for the last nine months a exceeded that for the same period of i. last year by £612,418, and he esti--3 mated that the surplus to credit on March 31st would be £529.795. Speaking with reference to the position of the Legislative Council he said that of fourteen recent vcancies five members had been North Island - representatives and nine South Island. -■ In their recommendations to , the Governor the Ministry had j proposed that eight should be appointed from the North Island and 1 six from the South.
