ASCENT OF NGARIUHOE AND RUAPEHU.
Dr. Marshall, who with others made a successfull ascent o! Mount Ngaruahoe a few days ago haa returned to Dunedin. Speaking to a Daily Times reporter, Dr Marshall said : "I found that the summit of the mountain has considerably changed since my previous visit of a few years ago. The crater still has some outside walls, with the same features as it has possessed for the last 1 20 years or more. Internally, there have been considerable changes. The deep interior. crater has changed its 1 position from the south-west to the ' west side. It is now two hundred and fifty feet to three hundred feet in depth, and about one hundred 1 yards across. There is a boijing lake of green water at the bottom. The vertioal sides of the crater are incrusted with sulphur, and from many places steam issues with a loud noise. The small crater shows little change. Sulphur, dioxide, and sulphuretted hydrogen gasej were being emitted in great volumes from the crater, and indicated an activety rather greater than usual. Ruapehus (9175 ft) was also ascended, and as the day was quite clear the view in all directions was uninterrupted. The amount of snow was great, and some hundred of feet of step-cutting proved necessary. The lake in the centre of the icefield was uot steaming perceptibly, but it was certainly not frozen over."
