SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
Auckland, October 29. The agents of the Oceanic S.S. Company announce that it is probable the Sonoma will not leave Auckland "for 'Frisco until about November 16tb, a week late. Mr Cockroft, the general passenger agent at San Francisco for the Oceanic Steamship Company arrived by the Sonoma to-day. Asked whether he was commissioned by the company to make any proposals to the Government in connection with the renewal of the San Fancisco service, Mr Cockroft stated that he had not received any such instructions. He intended to" proceed to tbe Exhibition shortly, and while ia Wellington would oall upon tbe Premier. When he returned to America, he would report on matters relative to the company. Asked whether he could throw any light upon the exclusion of Japanese from the schools in San Francisco, he explained that the number of educational institutions had been somewhat diminished by the earthquake and fire, and that those left were rather crowded. In consequence, therefore, the question with those in charge was of giving preference to whites over those of other races. The question, when ho left 'Frisco, was not regarded as serious, and certainly not as one for international complications.
