FIRES.

Dunedin, October 29. A great portion of the State forest at Dusky Sound was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. A fierce Jwind prevailed, and the fire swept from end to end. Rain stopped the fire at night. The outbreak waR caused by five fidhermen boiling billies on the banks of the river. A fire broke out. in the premises of Mr Burrowes, bootmaker, MacLaggan street, at 11.45 last night. The premises were comletely gutted. The Universal Hospital ad join ing was slightly damaged by water, ggj Wanganui, October 27. „ At noon to-day a new four- roomed cottage and aa old three- roomed place, both owned aud occuied by Mr J. fcW. Haitwell, were burned to the ground. The buildings were beyond the borough water supply, aud the gale which was blowing at the tima gave no chance of extinguishing the fire. The insurances are £500 and £50 respectively on the buildings and furniture; the latter was saved with the exception of about £70 worth.
