The Honse met at 2.30 p.m. A return was laid on the table giving the names of the owners of land of over £50,000 in value.
The House went into Committee to further consider the Estimates.
Customs Department, £43,880: Mr Tanner moved that it be reduced by £880 as an indication of the House's opinion that the potato duty ought to be abolished.— Lost by 35 to 32 votes.
Mr Baume moved that item be reduced by £1, for the same reason. —Lost by 29 to 28 votes. The Customs and Marine votes passed unaltered. Land and Survey Department, £141,176, was under discussion when the 5.30 adjournment arrived.
The House resumed at 7.30 p.m., when the consideration of the Estimates was continued.
After some discussion had ensued upon river control, the subsidising of doctors in outlying districts, and the bringing out 5f a second edition of the "Settler's Handbook," the vote for the Land and Survey Department passed without any alteration.
Department of Agriculture, £s9, 2B3, evoked considerable discussion, but ultimately the vote was passed without any alteration Valuation Department. £31,156, pased unaltered. The Government Valuation of Land was reported from the Legislative [Council, with certain amendments. The latter were agreed to.
LThe Advances to Workers' Bill was received by Governor's message, and was read for the first time.
