MISCELLANEOUS ENTERTAINMENTS.
There was a large attendance on July 17 at the second of tbe Winter Entertainments given in the Diocesan Library, on behalf of the Parish of Christ Church. The first item was a pianoforte duet by the? Misses Kempthorne and Stevens, which was much appreciated. Then a chorus by a dozen ladies and gentlemen, "Sweet and Low" and "Carnival is Passing," both thoroughly enjoyed, calling forth loud applause. A violin solo by Miss Rowe was well played. A song by Miss Bainford called forth an encore, responded to by a bow. A dialogue over a "Brown Paper Parcel" by the Misses Reeves, afforded much amusement to the audience from the start to finish. Then came a chorus, "Little Jack Homer, " and for this nothing would satisfy but a repetition. Three scenes from "The Rivals : " by Misses Hodson and Stevens, and
Messrs Cooke, Parker and de Tourettes, was a fine performance. Where all the leading characters are so good it is hard to say who is best. Mr Cooke as Sir Anthony, and Miss Hodson as Mrs Malaprop were^;very fine impersonations. Miss Leggat sang in her usual artistic manner, and was encored. The glee {' Where
are You Going My Pretty Maid" was well rendered by Misses Cock and Stevens and Rev. J, P. Kempthorne and Mr B. Tasker. The entertainment finished with a very pretty action song, "Miss Milligan's School," in which Misses Sclanders, Clifford, Bamford, Clougher, Wright and Kempthorne charmed the audience with their graceful interpretation of the doings of the school. The originators of these entertainments are to be congratulated upon the enjoyable programmes presented.
There was a large attendance at the Druids' Hall on July 20, when a micsellaneous entertainment was given in aid of the Temperance Social Club. The first parfe of the programme consisted of a concert, the members of the Citizens' Band playing the overtures for each part, and a number of selections outside the hall, their music proving a great attraction. Songs were contributed by Mrs W. Snodgrass, Misses H. Stallard and W. Haase, and Messrs T. Condell, B. Tasker, A. Aydon, junior, Stobans, and "Hindley (comic). Messrs Aydon (senior), and Hindley gave bone and tambourine performances. The concert was very enjoyable, several of the vocalists being re-called. In the second part, the farce "My Wife's Second Floor" was produced. The characters were impersonated as follows: — Captain Topheavy, R.N., Mr R. Watson: Mrs Topheavy, Miss L. Watson; Mr Felix Toddle, an artist, Mr W. J. S. Smith; Fanny Maylove. Mrs R. Watson ; Jacob, the manservant (who was as close and dumb as an oyster), Mr A. Karsten; Mrs Downey, Miss F. Gledhill; and Tim, a porter, Mr Clark. The farce was well played, and from the start to the finish kept the audience in a state of laughter. The management is to be congratulated on the very creditable perform' ance, which reflected credit on all taking part therein.
