(From Our Own Correspondent. ) Tbe usual "weekly meeting of tbe LiteraryJSociety was held in tbe State Schoolroom on Monday evening, Mr P. Higgins presiding. Although the weather wo re threatening aspect, the attendance was good, all present were:, well paid- for their trouble in turning out. item on the Syllabus was "An Entertainment andean J Open PJSfight.'' The programme consisted of readings, recitations, songs and [ duets, the former Wing mostly of a humorous as well as instructive character, and J were much appreciated by all prej sent, and the evening passed all too | quickly. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed to. the harmony :— Bongs and duets: Misses Higgins (2), Miss B. Hoult and Miss Lammas, and Len Hoult. Recitations: Mrs Edridge. Miss Cropp, and Mr W. Lock (humorous). Roadings: Messrs B. Cropp, E. Edridge, W. Lock, Len Hoult, and I. Tunnicliffe. The thanks of the Society were conveyed to Mr Lock for having journeyed from Nelson to be present. Mr Lock's contributions and readings'and recitationns were muck appreciated...; In^return ing thanks, Mr Lock said that the good resulting from such Societies as these could not be measured, as anyone attending, -whether they took part or not, could not fail to benefit by it, be also signified bis willingness to help in any way to further tho objects of the Society. Next Monday opening is set apart as" An Evening with Dickens," and will no doubt prove interesting.*
