SENSATIONAL CAPTURE.

A sensational affair is reported by the Waipawa correspondent of the Hawke's Bay "Herald" to have occurred at Tikokino on Sunday morning last. The correspondent writes:— For a long time past Mr E. O. Eoach, who keeps a store at Tikokino, has missed things. Every effort was made to trace the missing j goods, and to determine bow they \ were removed. Many afweary night's ■ watching had been dono without I result. On a recent Saturday evening Constable Raynes went to Tikokino and was admitted into the store, where he remained. At about three o'clock in the morning Constable Raynes and Mr Roach heard sounds, and suddenly the back door was opeaed and a man entered. He waa armed with a revolver. As the intruder advanced into the store the watchers made a move to capture him. Upon being called upon to surrender, the man made a dash and shut himself in an office. He was ' quickly followed, the door was burst j in, and, after a shot had been fired over his head, he was rushed and soon handcuffed. Mr Roach identified the man as John Matheson, who ia well known in Tiki sino. On Monday morning Matheson made his appearance at Waipawa before Mr M. Murray, J.P. r charged with unlawfully breaking and entering Roach's store at Tikikino with intent to commit a crime, and was remanded to appear at Napier. The accused was formerly a member of the New Zealand Police Force, but was discharged from the force in consequence of evidence given at the enquiry into the Dunedin police scandal held some time ago.
