BEWILDERING LAW.

Avoidant., February 19, A meeting of tire Grey Lynn Borough Council was held this morning to considei the question as to whether or not a Licensing Committee should be elected, seeing that No-license was carried «,t the recent local option poll. The Licensing Act oi 1895 stated that under such circumstances it was not necessary to elect a Committee. The Licensing Act of 1904, however, repealed the Act of 1895, therefore things remained as before. The Returning Officer is of opinion that a Committee requires tc be elected, and this view is also taken bj the Returning Officer for Auckland. As, however, a Committee would be useless in a No-license district, the Grey Lynn Council consulted the Borough solicitor, and his opinion was that the Grey Lynn Council being the " local authority," may esereife its discretion upon the matter, Acting upon that advice, the Council decided not to hold any election for ft Committee.
