THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.

Auckland, TTebrury 18. The Leader of the Opposition was entertained at a garden party on Saturday, when between 1500 and 2000 persons were present. Mr Massey, in his seech, said the defeat of the Opposition was mainly due to the patronage attaching to the Ministerial position, the promises of ex- | penditure of Government money and organisation. He emphasised that the Opposition must organise. They were beaten, but would not take the defeat lying down. There were 150,000 electors in the Colony who declined to bow their knees to the great graven image that had been set up.
