The "Star's" Raratonga correspondent writes : It is stated on good authority that it is the intention of the French Government to send an official to Tahiti and adjacent French ( | islands for the purpose of reporting on their suitability as a convict settlement, with Tahiti as a base. A daring robbery is alleged to have been perpetrated by a couple of men earned Peter Grant and John Cullen at J. H. Anderson's store at nine o'clock last night. The thieves entered the front room of the store, and forcibly removed a case containing in cash £10 and a quantity of gold and silver jewellery. The two men named were arrested at 11 o'clock, and at the S.M. Court this morning were remanded for a week. Jewellery and cash were found on them when arrested. Greymouth, February 15. At the Arbitration Court it was announced that the dispute Tyneside Co. v. Employees had been settled out of Court. The Company have agreed to increase the hewing rate by 3d a ton for all coal won on the east side, making the rate 2s 7d, while all other coal will be paid for at' the rate of 2s 4d a ton. Feilding, February 16. A serious buggy accident occurred at noon to Mr C. Newall, of Makino. I As he was driving to Feilding the horse capsized tbe buggy and Newall was dragged. George Henry Landrebe, a lad aged 12^ years, was sentenced, at a special sitting of the Magistrate's Court this morning to twelve strokes wit a birch rod and to be sent to the Industrial School for placing a mile post across the rails near Pukeuru on the 2nd inst. Fortunately the drivßrof the Timaru tr&in saw the obstruction in time and pulled up. Evidence gave the accused a good character, and it was to the effect that he was of exceptional ability. Major Keddell, S. M. , said an example must be made to allay the uneasiness of tho travelling public and deter other mischievious boys from endangering life and property. Mr Keddell said he gladly heard cases at a special time in juvenile instances, but he differed from M*- Widdowson, S.M. at Dunesip* in closing the doors of the Court. v Mr Keddell said he could not see how any memo from the Department of Justice could over- ride the law of the land, which said that every subject was entitled to a fair and open hearing of his case. A newspaper correspondent, referring to the earthquake at Eketahuna yesterday, says the remarkable circumstance in connection with it is that severity seems to have been confined to a limited area. In Masterton, about twenty miles distant to the south, the shake was not felt. In all the outlying districts from Eketahuna much alarm was occasioned, and the hills in places seemed to dip. At one residence at Rongomai the chimney came down. Children proceeding to school at Eketahuna were thrown to the ground, and horses stampeded. At Alfredton, Nireaha, Jjtongoniai, and Tawatia, which are in the immediate vicinity of Eketahuna, the shock was felt severely, though much damage was not done^
