Mr George Jervis will be remembered by many old Nelsonians. It was he who rode through from Canvas Town to Nelson, and reported that Messrs Kempthorne, Pontius, Dudley and Matthews were missing, and led to the arrest of their murderers — Burgess, Kelly, Levy, and Sullivan. Hockey.— At the Botanical Reserve, yesterday afternoon, the ladies' hockey match Aonngi ( Wellington )versus Wakatu (Nelson) was played, and resulted in a win for the visitors by three goals to two. There was a large attendance of spectators, who evinced keen interest in the play, which at times was both fast and exciting. In the first spell the Wakatus scored twice, goals being obtained by Miss Ledger and Miss Bamford. Miss Simpson scored for the visitors. The play in this spell was fairly even, although the local team was pressed on several occasions, their defence was excellent. In the second half the visitors confined the play to the local territory, by splendid passing rushes, and Misa Watson succeeded in scor- \ ing two goals, the second one just on the call of time. On several occasions the Wakatus had play in the Aorangi circle, but unfortunately for them they were unable to score, the combined defence of the visitors being sound. Mr W. A. Dee refereed, and Messrs Nalder and Batchelor acted as touch judges. For the visitors, Misses Watson (centre forward). Willis, and Evans (wings), Seed (half back), and Kennedy and Fulton (forwards)played excellently, but the whole team acquitted themselves creditably. For the Wakatus, Misses Redgrave, Preshaw, Whitwell, Ledger, and Hanby were perhaps the best of an, even team. Adams has had operations commenced in the old Johnston's Uaited mine in Bedstead Gully, Coilingwood. ; The New Liberal Party.— The "Manawatu Daily Times." which is a strong Opposition journal, writing on the members of the New Liberal Party and the voucher case, says : — "We may say right away that we regard Mr Taylor's proposal for a public enquiry as a piece of bluff, intended to shield colleagues v;ho have forfeited all claim to be regarded any more seriously than a coterie of political scandal mongers. The legislators of New Zealand have hitherto been regarded as possessing a high standard of merit, as politicians go, but that reputation has not been enhanced by the action of the individuals referred to. Their obvious object throughout was not so much to bring about reform in public administration as to 'stoush' th« Premier, and lower him in the public estimation through the medium of his connections. This clsih'S of tactics has failed in New Zealand political life before, and will always fa il while the public pre-fserv-es the judicial spirit of which it j has given ample evidence on this occas ion. By all means let us have intelligent criticism of public affaim, and an investigation of Government administration and expenditure, but let us expel and keep out of Parliament scandal mongers and members of the win-tie-or-wrangle brigade."
