HIGH COMMISSIONERS' REPORT.

The Department of Industries. and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 9th inst. — ' The mutton market is slightly weaker with less demand, and prices are irregular. The average price today for Canterbury mutton is 4^d per lb, and North Island mutton 3%d per lb (light weights), 3%d and 3%d per lb respectively for heavy weights. High prices are restricting business. The lamb market has declined, as the season is too far advanced. The market is over supplied with heavy carcaseslof lamb. Toe average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is sJ^d per lb; for brands other than Canterbury, 5d per lb (light weights), and 4%d per lb respectively for heavy weights. The beef maraet is irregular. Supplies of American chilled beef are large. The ifaikoura shipment of chilled beef is unsatisfactory. The average price to day for hindquarters of New Zealand beef is 3^d per lb ; forequarters, 23^d per lb. The butter market is quiet, but steady, and buyers are not inclined to maks forward purchases at present prices. Supplies will be moderate. Danish, 120s; Canadian, 109s; Australian. 112s, nominal. The cheese market is steady. Canadian, 56s per cwt. | The hemp market is firm. Reports from Manila indicate that there is great improvement in the market, and a good business has been done. The price of New Zealand hemp, "Good, fair Wellington" grade, on spot, to day, is £28 10s per ton ; October-December shipments, £29.
