Brisbane, March 12. The steamer Lass o' Gowrie was blown ashore at Gape Tribulation, and lies piled on the rocks. The passengers and crew'are safe. Adelaide, March 12. Nine prisoners in the quarries in connection with the Dry Creek Stockade, made a determined attempt i to escape. As they ceased work they made a concerted rush. Four were captured inside the quarry reserve, but the others got away and scattered. All were recaptured after a long chase. The warders fired several shots to stop the rush, but none of the prisoners were injured. Sydney, March 12. The "Daily Telegraph," discussing the birth rate decline, says — "Poverty is the explanation which breaks down utterly when it is tested by appjicgr it to New Zealand, which community, boasting one of the highest averages of diffused prosperity to be found in the world, has a birth rate lower than most States of Australia."
