A BRILLIANT RECORD.

Sergt. J. W. Oh ing, the rifle champion of New Zealand, has a brilliant record. He first competed at the Eifle Championship Meeting; at Auckland in 1884, and next at Wanganui in 1886. Fourteen years elapsed before he again went to a meeting to represent his corps, the Waimea Bifles, and it was in 1901 he fired at Wanganui. This year, however, he did nothing brilliant. The last three years he has competed at Trentham with increasing success until at last he has won the coveted championship. In 1902 he was 26th on the list; in 1903, 12th; and this year champion. At the local Rifle* Association meeting, Sergt. Ching: has been very successful. Out of the seven meetings held he has won the championship five times, was second on one occasion, and third on the other. On these performance* he may justly be entitled to be called the champion shot of Nelson. In 1887-1888 he won the medal for the best shot in the South Island, and in 1900-1901 finished second. In 1901---1902 he won the medal for being che best shot in the Nelson district.
