FOOTBALL.
SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. There was a large attendancee of spectators at the Park yesterday afternoon to witness the Senior and Third - class Seven-a-side Tournaments held under tHe direction of the Nelson Rugby Union. A splendid afernoon's sport was provided, and the contests resulted in some capital exhibitions of football. The senior tournament fell to the Nelson Olub, after an exciting game with the College Olubj and the thirdclass. toufhaMent was won by the ftivals, who played off also with the Collegians. THE SENIOR MATCHES. The flrat of the series of sienior matches was played between the NELSON AND ALBION teams, ahd resulted in rattier ia hollow .victory for the former by 23 joints to 8. Stewart started play, and Logan fumbling the ball Nelson were put on the defence, Pike showing up "strongly. 'Houiker, however, broke away, and cleared the field, ultimately passing to Smith* who scored. The Nelson skipper .failed With the Kick— -Nelson 3, Albions pil.:, A jew, minuted later Sihith tiiade an unsuccssful attempt at goal from half-way, and McKegney kicking well down the field play was taken to Nelson quarters. Logan relieved the pressure by a good kick, but Whiting and Stewart, returned to the afctadk. Bbon fchbn dribbledjthe ball, and Sniith seized it and cleared the field, scoring behind the posts. He added the major points— Nelson 8, Albion 0. A few minutes later Smith again broke away and scored, also converting the try— Nelson. 13, Albion 0. From the kick off Kinr zett took play to the Nelson 25, and a rush in which Kinzett, Whiting, and Pike took part, ended in the latter scoring. Stewart converted — Nelson 13, Albion 5. Boon started the second half, and McKegney, Kinzett, and Liddle rushed play to the Nelson line, where Logan attempted to kick out of bounds; but missing it, Kinzejit smartly .scored. Stewart failed— Nelson 13, Albion S. Logan again fumbled badly in front of the Nelson goal, but a free kick j relieved the pressure. The Nelson men attacked, Logan, Smith, and Lowe doing good work. From a scrum near the line Boon dribbled through and scored. Smith successfully negotiated the kick— Nelson 18, Albion' 8. .Give and take play ensued, until Lowe dribbled through, and seizing the ball Scored near the posts. Smith once more piloted the i ball, safely ovor the bar— Nelson 23, | Albion 8. Time was then called. ! Mr Chisholm refereed. COLLEGE V. RIVAL. This was an evenly-contested game, and proved very exciting. The similarity of the colors was rather confusing, and it was difficult at times to distinguish tne players. From the kick off the Collegians i rushed play to the Rival line, but I Barltrop kicking out of bounds saved ; trouble. The, College returned to ! the attack, Harley breaking away, ; but Barltrop again saved. Cooper i. , then dashed to the line, but was grassed by Murray. Recovering he essayed another attempt but fell a victim to Barltrop near the line. From the scrum Everett scored, and Hamilton kicked a fine goal— College 5, Rival 0. Splendid passing by the I College backs put the cup winners: ! again on the defence, but their j speedy skipper, J. Richards, broke; ! clean away, only to be collared after; 'an exciting ohase by Cuoper i. and , Cutfield. The Collegians then made things very warm, and just before half-time Harley scored, Hamilton again converting— College 10, Rival 0. Everett started the second spell, Stapp returning well down the field. ; Play worked to the centre, and then | Richards kicked to the College line. : Blincoe followed up well but lost the : ball, and the Collegians were forced. Lively play up and down the field followed until, Murray kicked to the ' school line. Bilncoe's following up : resulted this? time in his scoring.. Jones kicked a good goal. The Rivals continued to press, but Cooper ii. saved splendidly, and shortly ■-. after from centre field Harley outstripped his opponents and scored . behind the posts. Hamilton was again successful with the kick. The \ game then ended— College 15, Rivals \5. Mr Mules refereed. THE FINAL : NELSON V. COLLEGE. Almosi immediately after play ' started, Boon, after a splendid dribbling rush, drew first blood for j Nelson. Smith failed with the kick —Nelson 3, College 0. The Nelson ! continued to press, Houiker, Smith, | and Lowe beine particularly aggres- '• sive, but the sterling defence of the • College backs prevented any score, Cooper i. doing capital work. From jajbrilliant rush Cooper ii. made a dash for the line, but was stopped by Smith. The Collegians continued to press, and ultimately Cooper ii. scored amidst cheers. Hamilton failed with the kick— Nelson 3, College 3. The College then narrowly escaped scoring again, Hamilton just missing a penalty goal. Not to be denied, the Coljegians once more attacked, ahd Thompson carried play well to the Nelsoh line. Here Harley passed to Cutfield, and the latter scored amidst great excitement. Hamilton kicked a magnificent goal —College 8, Nelson 3. On changing ends Nelson became the aggressors, I and Smith made a good shot at goal I from a free kick. Almost immediately afterwards Nelson was given another free kick, and this time Smith placed a good goal— College 8, Nelsoh 6. Play now became very exciting, - and all efforts an the part of the kelson seven were nullified by the splendid collaring of the Colllege i backs, Smith receiving particular attention. The play kept going up and down the field, both sides on several occasions. narrowly escaping a score. Logan then ran well to the line, but was held up by two Collegians. However, as soon as the ball was in play again, Smith snapped it up and scored amidst deafening cheers. The Nelson skipper converted, and the tournament was thus won by 11 points to 8.
